    • How You Could Feel More Positive in Just Four Weeks with Probiotics

      In previous posts we have looked at how probiotics can influence your food choices, but recent research also suggests just four weeks of probiotic use using a combination of Bifido bacteria and Lactobacillus, we can have a better relationship with events in our past (commonly referred to as rumination), leaving us less at risk of developing depression.

      The study involved a small group of healthy people with no current mood disorders in a triple blind, placebo-controlled and randomised study. In order to measure the results of the multi strain probiotic administered a revised version of the Leiden index of depression scale was used.

      One of the most interesting parts of this study is that the probiotic formula was actually found to decrease what’s called the “cognitive reactivity” to sad feelings. Something considered an established marker when looking at people’s vulnerability to depression.

      Whilst we all experience sad feelings at some point in our lives it is often the spiral of negative thoughts towards these feelings that can trigger deeper symptoms of depression.

      These results now give us the first real evidence using gold standard methodology, that not only is the gut bacteria an integral part of our brain and cognitive function, but managing the balance of the bacteria in the gut can actually now be a preventative intervention for those either prone to depression or those who simply want to maintain their positive outlook!

      The strains of bacteria used in this study were Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus salivarius and Lactobacillus lactis.       PRIMORDIAL SOUP

      Serves 2-3

      • 1 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil
      • ½ red onion, roughly chopped                                    
      • 1 garlic clove, crushed
      • 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped
      • 1 large sweet potato, chopped
      • 1 heaped tsp grated fresh root ginger
      • ¼ tsp turmeric
      • 2tsp reduced salt vegetable Bouillon powder
      • ½ red pepper, diced
      • 75ml coconut milk

       

      1. Heat the oil in a large pan and gently sauté the onion and garlic for a few minutes until softened.

      2. Add the carrot, sweet potato, ginger, turmeric and vegetable powder. Just cover with boiling water and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the vegetables are soft.

      3. Add the red pepper and coconut milk, then blend until smooth and thick.

       

      SUPER GREENS MIX

      Serves 1

      • ¼ bag watercress, rinsed and dried
      • ¼ bag baby leaf spinach, rinsed and dried      
      • a handful of basil leaves
      • a handful of parsley leaves
      • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
      • squeeze of lemon juice, to taste

       

      1. Blend all the ingredients together in a blender or food processor, or finely chop the herbs and stir in the oil. The mixture should hold together in a similar way to pesto.

       

      SUPER FOOD MUESLI

      Serves 1                                                                                   

      • 40g whole rolled porridge oats
      • 1 tbsp ground almonds or desiccated coconut
      • 1tbsp of mixed sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, grinded
      • ½ small apple, grated
      • 1tbsp mixed berries or dried fruit like sultanas
      • ½ tbsp ground cinnamon, to taste

       

      1. Place all the ingredients in a bowl and cover with double the amount of boiling water.

      2. Stir and leave to thicken for a couple of minutes until the oats have soaked up the water and become soft and plump
